Master gardener training

Southern Aroostook County gardeners are invited to participate in the 2009 University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Training in Houlton. The sessions will be held one evening per week from 5:30-8:30 p.m. starting in October.
The Master Gardener Program provides participants with more than 40 hours of in-depth training in the art and science of horticulture. Trainees receive current, research-based information from industry experts and UMaine Extension educators and specialists.
In return, trained master gardeners volunteer their time and expertise in many diverse ways for the community through programs and activities. As part of a nationwide Cooperative Extension effort, master gardener volunteers are recognized as well-trained practitioners who serve and beautify their communities. In 2009, the sessions will focus on soil fertility, botany, pest management and ornamental horticulture. The manual also includes chapters on food gardening (vegetable and fruits).
Applications for the Master Gardener Program are available from the Aroostook County Extension office by mail at P.O. Box 8, Houlton, ME 04730, by phone at 532-6548 or 800-287-1469, or by e-mail aplant@umext.maine.edu. The participation fee of $90 covers the cost of the reference manual and the training site expenses.
If you are a person with a disability and will need any accommodations,  please call Andrew Plant at 800-287-1469 to discuss your needs at least 14 days prior to this event.
