AVOCA, NY – Carroll Lincoln Haines, age 77, peacefully died September 4, 2009, at his home in Avoca, NY. He was born February 12, 1932, in Presque Isle, Maine, and married Patricia Sager Haines of Avoca, NY in 1952, who survives him.
He was the son of Frederick and Minnie Haines of Presque Isle, Maine who founded Haines Mfg. Co. in Presque Isle, Maine and manufactured potato handling equipment. Carroll’s early years were spent farming potatoes and working in his father’s workshop and then in 1946, Carroll came to Avoca, NY and started Haines Equipment Inc. in Avoca, NY and worked closely side by side with his wife Patricia for almost 63 years. His love for family and loyalty to his employees and customers allowed many blessing to be fulfilled. His openhanded management style allowed everyone to be themselves and prosper.
He purchased Norris Mfg. in the 1940’s and then Boggs Manufacturing of Wayland, NY in the early 1970’s and then became a Lockwood dealer which complimented the business.
He served his country in 1952-1953 during the Korean War, was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church, International Gideon, served on the board of Bank of Avoca, and numerous potato and community service activities.
Although he was 77 when he died, he never retired and kept up his daily tasks and never gave up his pursuit of his business adventures. He was a real-estate developer in his own way by cleaning up and developing many pieces of property in Avoca. He loved flying his Cessna 182 airplane delivering parts up and down the eastern shore for his customers which were involved in potato and onion agriculture industry. This passion of flying has been handed down to his children and grandchildren. He also loved traveling and meeting many customers which took him around the world. His hobbies included a love for music, snowmobiling, canoeing, biking and growing vegetable.
He is survived by a brother, Harold Jr. (Jackie) Haines of Presque Isle, ME and his children Carol Haines (Marshall) Leach, Holly Haines West, Melody Haines, Patrick (Ruby) Haines, Minnie Haines (William) Brennan, and Peter Haines (Jenny Haag), and twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and countless friends throughout the world. He is surely be missed by all.
Calling hours were scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2009, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Avoca Baptist Church, Avoca, NY and the funeral immediately followed calling hours at 2 p.m.
