WASHINGTON D.C. — U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins have announced the U.S. Department of Energy through its Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program has awarded nearly $140,000 in federal grant funding for two Indian tribes in Maine to help those communities become more energy efficient and create new jobs.
The Aroostook Band of Micmac Indians and the Penobscot Tribe received $54,200 and $84,700, respectively. The funding is being distributed to Maine through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Senators Snowe and Collins worked with a bipartisan group of senators to craft the legislation that became law in February.
“This funding award will provide both the Aroostook Band of Micmac Indians as well as the Penobscot Tribe with much-needed resources to help improve energy efficiency, spur economic development, and create good-paying jobs,” said the senators in a joint statement. “We are pleased the Department of Energy recognized these communities for such critical assistance.”
EECBG funding can be used for energy audits and building retrofits in the residential and commercial sector, the development and implementation of advanced building codes and inspections, and the creation of financial incentive programs for energy efficiency improvements.
