Founded by the United States Department of Labor and receiving students since 1977, the Loring Job Corps Center (LJCC) has continuously provided education and career technical training for students from New England to New York.
Loring Commerce Centre was chosen as a home for the LJCC because the facilities selected were ideal for a Job Corps Center.
The center currently utilizes 45 acres and 13 buildings on the Loring Commerce Centre.
Over the past 13 years of operation, several career technical training (vocations) have changed based on changes in industry and job placements available, and it is anticipated that the Career Technical Training offering will continue to change based on expectations for prospective employment opportunities.
Currently, there are 135 full-time, 10 part-time, four full-time contracted and five part-time subcontracted employees at the LJCC, who commute from Houlton, Presque Isle, Caribou, Van Buren, Woodland, New Sweden, Stockholm, Fort Fairfield, Mars Hill, Washburn and Connor.
While the LJCC may be 13 years old, the Job Corps program, funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, has been in existence for 45 years and currently has 122 Job Corps Centers with the number continuing to increase.
With continued funding and support from Congress, officials at the LJCC anticipate the size of the program capacity at Loring to remain fairly constant with some adaptation to accommodate changing industry expectations and job placement opportunities.
Additionally, LJCC officials have stated that any major new business start-up occurring on the Loring Commerce Centre that may have both a Maine and/or national job placement significance may assist in the initiation of a new Career Technical Training program.
LJCC students enjoy the peacefulness of being located on the former base, the agricultural communities and the friendly people of the area.
