$780 raised to benefit cancer research

LIMESTONE — When Limestone-Maine School of Science and Mathematics students Ty Tracy, Dylan Morgan and Nate Berube arrived at school Sept. 17, little did they know it would be a hair-raising experience.

The three boys saw teacher Trish Gervais, who teaches science at the school, wearing a bald cap as part of the “Be Bold, Be Bald” campaign and decided they too would join the cause. Instead of wearing bald cap, though, the three students took it one step further and shaved their heads.
The students were raising money for breast cancer awareness with the proceeds going to the Small Army for Our Cause, a Boston-based organization that raises money for various causes.
Small Army’s “Be Bold, Be Bald” campaign is a one-day, nationwide effort to raise money for various cancer-related charities, including the American Cancer Society and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. To participate, individuals sign-up to wear a bald cap on Sept. 17 and collect pledges with the proceeds going to cancer research.
“It started out as a joke,” said Morgan. “We thought we’d probably make $100 a person, but by the end of the second day [of collecting pledges] we were up to $780.”
The three student athletes had their heads shaved during lunch time and gathered quite a crowd in the process.
“It was crazy,” Berube said.
“Our friends couldn’t really believe it,” Tracy added.
“Yeah, they were all like ‘You guys won’t do that, you’re too big of a pretty boy,’” Morgan said. “But we did it. The principal dismissed the whole school so they could watch.”
