Sherman Area Senior Citizens
Sherman, Stacyville, Benedicta and Silver Ridge
The area senior citizens went on our fall outing on October 12, with thirteen members. We rented a van from Wayne’s Auto. We traveled the old way going to Old Town.
We had lunch at the Governor’s. Then we traveled on to tour the Cole’s museum on the Perry road in Bangor. It was very interesting seeing the horse drawn equipment, snow removal, fire fighting equipment, Vintage automobiles and railroad memorabilia. The stories behind it all. Some difference in what it is today. Brought a lot of memories for our seniors.
We traveled back to Lincoln, stopped at the boarding house where one of our seniors is a resident, Mary Dickinson. We had a nice visit with Mary. She enjoyed seeing her friends. If anyone would like to send her a card, her address is 10 East Broadway, Lincoln, Maine.
The members that went on the trip were Fred and Annie Atkinson, Eva Perry, Donna Grass, Linniea Perry, Terese Albert, Esther Greenier, Mary Lawler, Dean and Frances McKenney, June Gagnon, Sandra and Paul Qualey. Paul drove the van. We will be meeting on October 21. Hope we can get some new members. We meet the first and third Wednesday of every month.
Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing
I’m here again and the day is bright and cheerful. The foliage has had its peak, so the experts said. I believe it but it is still very beautiful today.
Peggy Robinson, daughter of Arlene Friel, is in Indiana with some friends visiting. She will be gone several weeks.
Paul Armstrong and Carolyn Carmichael are looking for a hall or place where they can entertain and provide music. If you know of a suitable gathering place, give one of them a call. I’m sure they will appreciate it.
Charlene and Brian Henderson, our liasions, are in Florida vacationing. They will return soon. We miss them.
Elizabeth Cone is a patient at Houlton Regional Hospital, at the time of this writing. Elizabeth used to be a worker here at Ricker Plaza. Get better, Liz.
One of my classmates died, Maxine Thomas Cox of Washburn. Maxine was a great singer, even in high school. She entertained us at proms and other social functions. Our sympathy is extended to her family.
Donna Izzo is a daily visitor of her mother, Opal Crane.
This is National Friendship Week. Have you thought about visiting a sick friend, just call first, keep it to 10 minutes and socialize. I’m sure your loved one will thank you for it.
Thank you again for all the tenants who have left needed bags at my door. It’s a big help to those in need.
Also thanks to the ones who have left free vegetables too.
Donna Burns is expecting cousins from Connecticut. Donna had an outing with her sister-in-law on Wednesday.
Have you decorated for Halloween? So many here have and it’s delightful to see the different decorations on the doors, and the community room looks so great too with fall flowers. Take a ride around town and you will see the tombs, ghosts, lights, signs and other webs. Boo-o-o-!
The thought for the day is taken from John 14:20-4: “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself that where I am there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know and the way ye know.”
Have a wonderful week.

Purple Hat Society
by Lois Downing
The Smoki Haulers Snowmobile Clubhouse in Oakfield was the place the Purple Hat met on Tuesday, October 13 for its October meeting. A large number of ladies “dressed up” for Halloween. It was a fun party.
Charlotte Marley greeted everyone as they entered the clubhouse, decorated with pumpkins, and other Halloween decor. The menu was beef stew, mixed salad, tea/coffee, crackers, and a decorated cake with ice cream. Sandy Wyman was the maker of the beef stew, Delores Locke the salad, and Sandy made a beautiful cake. The cake was a birthday cake with little orange flags; on each flag was the name of the twelve months and the Purple Hat ladies celebrating a birthday in that month. The cake also had a decoration made by Charlotte Marley and the combination of chocolate and white made it more unusual; the frosting was purple and white.
Wannetta Townsend offered the blessing before the meal. After the meal we sang “Happy Birthday” to everyone.
Each lady gave her Purple Hat name. Charlotte conducted three games; one was pin the nose on the pumpkin; two lines of ladies had to passed on a small basket under the chin without touching it to the next person; and the third game was a ring toss.
Discussion was held as to where our Christmas party will be. Maureen Bird and Doreen Messina are both leaving for Florida and we wished them a happy winter and a get back safely wish.
Birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged. Doreen Messina gave a Halloween story, as did Charlotte.
A moment of silence was given for Velma Cale, recently deceased and a member.
Helping with the serving were Bob Locke, Pete Peters and Bill Wyman.
Attending from Houlton were: Betty Wyman, Paula Wyman, Margaret Dudley, Ethelyn Nealey, and Lois Downing.
From Smyrna was Charlotte Marley; from New Limerick, Doreen Messina; from Presque Isle, Mildred Gagnon.
Also, from Oakfield, Delores Locke, Alma Clark, Maureen Bird; from Dyer Brook, Wannetta Townsend, Marie Gillotti and Sandy Wyman; from Merrill, Arlene Friel.
From Cary were Denise Kinney and Joanne Scott.
The next meeting will be November 10 at Elm Tree Diner at the former Governor’s Restaurant, North Road, Houlton.
