HOULTON — Rebecca Hickman, a native of Houlton, has always enjoyed putting pen to paper. And while many might think that implies she is a writer, Hickman is actually an accomplished artist.
Hosted by the Blue Moon Gallery, Hickman’s artwork will be on display at Visions, 66 Main St., in Houlton Oct. 30-Dec. 5. An open house reception, featuring Hickman discussing her works of art, will be held Oct. 30 from 5:30-8 p.m. The artist will also host a lecture and open discussion on Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. to discuss each individual piece of her artwork and will also give a tutorial on ink illustration.
“The whole idea of the exhibition is to feature differences in human spirituality and religious equality,” Hickman said.  “A lot of my work has foundations in a peaceful and loving heart. A lot of my pieces have lots of heavy symbolism in them. We are surrounded in symbolism in every day life.”
Hickman’s work, which date back to 2007, is entirely ink–based. Typically, it takes between 20-35 hours to complete each piece of art.
Sample of Hickman’s artwork can be found online at www.bexhix.deviant.com/gallery/. She has conducted workshops in the Bangor area for spiritual art making.
Hickman, a 2003 graduate of Houlton High School and a fine arts graduate from the University of Maine, is pursuing a career in the mental health field, while obtaining her master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling. She has been illustrating for seven years and prefers ink on Bristol. Much of her inspiration comes from mythological tales, religious dogma, and spiritual practices.
The exhibit will feature about 17 pieces of artwork. Visions Gallery is a local gallery that exhibits and sells local Maine artisan’s art and merchandise. Visions Gallery is open Tuesdays through Friday, noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
