Library ‘bookmarks’
Washburn Memorial Library recently held a spaghetti supper and auction. The proceeds from the event went towards buying new computers for public use.

There were 50 items to bid on and a 50/50 drawing was held and won by Rodney Bourgoine. The library staff and trustees thank all those who donated their time to the supper and items for the auction.
Another special fund-raiser is ongoing, with the proceeds going towards the public computers, and it is the sale of a new cookbook, entitled “A Literary Feast.” The book contains 209 recipes from area cooks and some helpful hints too. The price of the cookbook is $10 and can be picked up at the library or by any library trustee. They make great Christmas presents.
The library recently held its monthly story time with the theme “Sesame Street’s 40th anniversary.” The evening started out with the beginning scream, which is a favorite part of the story times, followed by those attending sitting quietly for a minute. The children are always so proud of themselves when they accomplish this.
Virginia Farley read the story “Just Like Ernie,” then Dolores Woodman read “A Visit to the Sesame Street Library.” Door prizes were handed, out then Janet Peary read “Big Bird Flies Alone.” There were 13 children and seven adults present, and the door prize winners included: Dawson McCoy, Rebecca Savoy, Valerie Flood, Dakota McCoy, Makayla Dickinson, Alexa Woodman, Naomie Haines, Tal McCoy, Scott Flood, Camille McCoy, Victoria Savoy, Christa McCoy and Alyssa Dennett. The next story time will take place on Dec. 21 and the theme will be “Happy Holidays!”
The hours for the library during the holidays will be Thursday, Dec. 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the library will be closed on Friday, Dec. 25, and Friday, Jan. 1, 2010.

Boy Scout training
Members of Washburn Troop 177 held their annual Junior Leader Training and Planning Session at Camp Harrison during the weekend of Nov. 27-29. During the session, the Scouts worked on team building, problem solving and skills presentations. Also, the Scouts were trained in their new positions of responsibility to take affect as of Friday, Jan. 1, 2010.
The annual plan was completed where the boys decided what themes for each month will be, what two merit badges will be completed during the month and what monthly activities will be planned.
The boys watched the movie “Follow Me Boys” on Saturday evening and ended the weekend on Sunday morning with a Scouts Own Religious Service which was conducted by Taylor Skinner, Parker Thompson and Tyler Jardine.
The Saturday evening meal consisted of the Scouts preparing and cooking several of their delicious Dutch oven meals as part of their training. Scoutmaster Larry Harrison was the trainer for the weekend and Assistant Leader Randy Thompson was the chief cook and dishwasher for most meals.
