Walmart clinic now open

PRESQUE ISLE – Imagine being able to get your groceries, a cup of coffee, service for your car, and treatment for your sore throat all in one place. The recent opening of The Clinic at Walmart, operated by Horizons, a subsidiary of The Aroostook Medical Center (TAMC), makes it possible.
Aroostook County’s newest clinic, located inside the Presque Isle Walmart store, provides basic healthcare services including routine physicals, vaccinations, and treatment for minor injuries, including sore throats, sinus infections, upper respiratory infections, and earaches.
“Healthcare is changing, both here in The County and across the country,” said Dave Peterson, president/chief executive officer of TAMC. “The Clinic at Walmart provides access to the kind of convenient, affordable healthcare many of our customers are seeking. This clinic, along with our Walk-In Care clinic at North Street Healthcare, enhances and broadens the spectrum of healthcare services available in our area.”
The Clinic at Walmart is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday from noon-6 p.m. The clinic will appeal to people who need to see a healthcare provider after normal business hours or at other times when a primary care provider isn’t available. The clinic is also a good option for those who do not have a primary care provider.
“We think the clinic will appeal to busy families, those who do not have a medical home, and others who value convenience,” added Peterson.
The clinic will also benefit those who use the Emergency Department for routine medical care. The clinic is first-come, first-served, and is typically faster and less expensive than the Emergency Department. Improving access to healthcare on evenings and weekends should reduce the number of people using the Emergency Department, which will allow the staff to focus on treating true medical emergencies.
The Presque Isle clinic is the result of a partnership between TAMC, regional healthcare system EMHS, and Walmart. In November, a subsidiary of Eastern Maine Medical Center opened up a clinic in the Bangor Walmart store. Clinics operated by subsidiaries of EMHS member hospitals will open in Brewer, Waterville and Palmyra in early 2010.
