Cold fails to deter varsity skiers

PRESQUE ISLE – Nordic skiers took to the trails Friday at the Nordic Heritage Center in very cold weather, with Fort Kent, Caribou and Presque Isle all making the trip in a freestyle meet hosted by Fort Fairfield.
In the girls race, Caribou totaled 20 points to defeat Fort Kent by six. Fort Fairfield took third with 47 points and Presque Isle ended up with 50 points.
Presque Isle was paced by Hallie Bartlett, who was third overall in 21 minutes, 15.6 seconds. She trailed only meet winner Gabby Naranja of Fort Kent (20:02.2) and runner-up Laura Collins of Caribou (20:31.1).
Also for the Wildcats, Emma Bartlett was 19th in 25:22.2 and Julia Brown was 22nd in 26:20.4 to lead their team. Chelsey Carroll (30:01.4), Jolonna Gough (30:15.3) and Courtney Colligan (30:50.1) were Presque Isle’s other competitors.
Fort Fairfield was led by Veronica Plourde, who was eighth in 23:07.3. Victoria Plourde of the Tigers was 13th in 23:49.5. Kylie Plourde was 20th in 25:56.4, with Camille Huffman (27:08.2) and Kaitlyn Kinsey (28:17.5) also competing for Fort Fairfield.
The Presque Isle boys, with 34 points, finished behind Caribou, which posted 10.
Jacob Towle of the ’Cats cracked the top 10 by finishing in 21:16.3, good for 10th overall. Teammate Chris Cawley was one spot back in 21:20.6. Justin Towle was 15th in 23:34.7, Thomas Freeman 18th in 25:56.2 and Adam Curtis 19th in 26:23.4.
Also finishing for Presque Isle were Gabe Player (27:41.5), Nathaniel Postell (27:44.6) and Freeman Short (31:20.7).
Isaac Wortman was the Tigers’ top performer on the day. He was 17th in 24:50.4. Collin Cassidy was next for Fort Fairfield in 29:48.4.
The Aroostook League Championship in classical skiing is set for the Nordic Heritage Center at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The freestyle championships will take place Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Kent.
