Army National Guard Spec. Tyler R. Bragg is returning to the U.S. after a deployment to Iraqi or Afghanistan in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom, respectively. The soldiers return to Fort Dix, N.J., for debriefing, evaluations and out-processing procedures before returning to their regularly assigned Army Reserve or National Guard units.
Bragg, a unit supply specialist, is a member of the 286th Combat Support and Sustainment Battalion, Bangor. He has served in the military for four years.
He is the son of Thomas R. and Tracy L. Bragg of Washburn.
His wife, Meagan, is the daughter of Russell and Shelley Dern of Chilton, Wis.
The specialist is a 2001 graduate of Washburn District High School.
On Wednesday, Feb. 10, there will be cross country skiing from 2:45-4:30 p.m. Grades 5-6 Boys will play Caribou at home.
There will be several extra events during the February school break and on Tuesday, Feb. 16, grades 5 -6 six boys’ and girls’ teams will be playing round-robin basketball at Mars Hill.
On Wednesday, Feb. 17, there will be Hot Shots at Caribou Recreation Center starting at 10 a.m.
On Thursday, Feb. 18, grades K-8 will be going to the Caribou Cinemas for a movie from 12:30 to 3:15 p.m. Also on Thursday, there will be a van going to Big Rock for snow tubing. This event is limited to the first 13 who sign up. The van will be leaving the Rec Center at 12:15 p.m. and returning home at 4:45 p.m.
On Friday, Feb. 19, the “Take it Outside” event will be held at Aroostook State Park from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is open to students in grades 4-8. On Saturday, the grades 5-6 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will hold a round-robin at Caribou Rec Center. For information on these and other recreation programs, contact Marcie at 455-4959.

During the February school break, Monday, Feb. 15 through Friday, Feb. 19, the Trailrunners’ kitchen will be open for breakfast and lunch every day as well as their regular hours.
Perham will be involved in a Family Snowshoe Walk at Salmon Lake Bog. The event will include hotdogs and cocoa, a bonfire and a guided tour of the area. The events start at 10 a.m. at the Perham Town Office on Saturday, Feb. 27.
The Perham Town Office will be closed on Monday, Feb. 15, to observe Presidents Day. They will also be closed the rest of the week from Feb. 16 through 18. Regular Town Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Perham selectmen will be meeting on Monday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m. and the Planning Board will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. For any questions, contact the Town Office at 455-5887 during regular business hours.

WDES students in grades pre-K to 5 viewed a Sugar Out Day booth, full of all kinds of non-sweet treats. The booth was presented by Charlotte Wilson, a nutrition associate at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
People need up to eight glasses of water daily, not sodas, teas or energy drinks. She told students “we need to ‘think our drink,’ focusing on trimming the consumption of less sugary liquids.”
Sugar Out Day is part of coordinating school health education, including oral health that WDES students will be taught during February’s School Oral Health Month.
The Washburn Cub Scout Pack 162 held its annual Pine Wood Derby on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Washburn District Elementary School. Placing first was Ryan Cole, second place went to Andrew Keller, third place was earned by Noah White and Carvor Pendexter won fourth-place honors. Other participants included: Alexander Hyde, Reed Plummer, Aaron Skinner and Ashton Henry.
All participants showed great sportsmanship, which is one of the great and important qualities of Cub Scouting.
Washburn’s Destination Imagination Team will be having a Bingo night and supper on Tuesday, March 2, at the Trailrunners’ snowmobile clubhouse. The supper will start at 5:30 p.m. and the menu will include hotdogs, beans, chili, rolls, French fries and various deserts.
Games will start at 7 p.m. and all proceeds will go towards the teams regional and state competition costs.
There will be a special Bingo and Spaghetti Dinner at the Trailrunners’ clubhouse to support the Washburn Rotary, with money going to provide some needed support in the Washburn community. It will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the clubhouse on Station Rd., and the supper will be served starting at 5:30 p.m., with Bingo commencing at 6 p.m.
There will be a special “Ms.” Washburn Pageant held on Saturday, March 6, at the high school gym at 6 p.m. The contestants this year are: Matt Donnelly, Adam Wilcox, Trevor Pendexter, Justin Howe, Jacob Theriault, Wyatt Rothlauf and Shayne Stevens.
