The Castle Hill Grange Hall Preservation Society looked back on 2009 as a successful year for their small group. There were several large functions held at the hall. Castle Hill residents Richard and Pat Watt held their 50th anniversary celebration at the hall in July and two local families hosted reunions. The Richardsons hosted a reunion in August and the McHatten family hosted their first reunion in 17 years, also in August. The Society was very pleased to see the 105-year-old building in use again.
The Society marked few accomplishments for the year, but those that were completed were desperately needed. A new kitchenette was built in the front of the hall to provide better accommodations for renters. Leaks were repaired in the hallway and bathrooms, and Herman Condon repaired the platform for the fire escape.
Projects for 2010 include heating the bathrooms, hanging curtains for the main area of the hall and finishing the hallway leading to the bathrooms. An anonymous donation was received in honor of Robert McHatten’s 95th birthday in the amount of $1,000. This donation will certainly assist the Society in its renovations.
Winter fund-raising is still going strong. The Society is currently selling candy bars at Chandler Farms in Mapleton, the Mapleton Town Office, Clukey’s Auto Parts in Presque Isle, or from any member.
New members are always encouraged to join to help keep the hall open for functions and town voting. Memberships are $10 a year, $15 for non-working members, $100 for a lifetime membership or $150 for a lifetime membership for a couple. Meetings are every Tuesday from February through November. By donating one hour a month, the Preservation Society will stay strong.
The Society will sadly miss Rhoda Wells and Forest Chandler, both lifetime members and supporters who passed away in 2009. They were both so willing to help and were so proud of the group’s accomplishments.
During the board meeting, it was decided that Christine McPherson will replace Joyce Boynton as board member. The officers will remain unchanged.
The Society would like to remind the public that the hall can be rented for $100 during the months of May through Nov. 1.
Thank you for your continued support!

As part of a school-wide community service project, students and faculty at Mapleton Elementary School are collecting items to be used in clinic bags that are provided to area cancer patients by the local group, C.A.N.C.E.R – Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery.
Needed items include puzzle books for adults, blank note cards, travel size toiletries, antibacterial wipes, Listerine breath strips, unflavored wax floss, pencils and sharpeners, pens, lifesaver candy, chapstick, gallon size Ziploc bags, and Boost drink (no substitute brands).
