100 Years Ago-March 2, 1910
Aroostook Times

    Ricker — The senior class of Ricker Classical Institute will present “Tommy’s Wife” in Heywood Opera House. The play is conceded to be superior to that of last year and already the parts are well learned and those who attend the play will see some first class local talent.

R.C.I. HONOR PARTS — Miss Sadie Stevens, left has been named valedictorian of the class of 1935 at Ricker Classical Institute and Miss Olive O. Pullen of North Amity is the salutatorian. Miss Stevens is president of the Girl Reserves Club, manager of the girls’ basketball team and has been in speaking contests. Miss Pullen is the editor of the school publication, the Aquilo, is center on the basketball team and is president of the French and Latin Club.     Annual Ball — The annual Ball of the Meduxnekeag Club will be held on the evening of March 31 and the following committee will have charge of arrangements: Leonard A. Pierce, Harry H. Stetson, E.C. Bates, W.F. Coan and Geo. A. Gorham.

    Flying Yankee — The new streamlined “Flying Yankee” recently purchased by the Boston & Maine Central Railroads and soon to be put in operation between Bangor and Boston will make its initial appearance in Houlton.
    Houlton girls — Before the season’s largest crowds of basketball fans, the Houlton High girls came from behind to soundly trounce the Aroostook Central Institute Lassies by a score of 23-11.
    Commencement honor — Principal Roy M. Hayes has announced that Miss Sadie Stevens of Ludlow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Stevens is valedictorian and Miss Olive O. Pullen of North Amity, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Pullen received the second honor part.
    Military Street Baptist Church — The Young Ladies Sewing Club held an enjoyable meeting at the home of Miss Pauline Berrie. Hostesses for the evening were Grace Bates, Ethel Hawkins and Abbie Brown,

    Royalty — Janice Good and Larry Woodworth were crowned king and queen of the Mardis Gras Ball held at the Putnam Gym.
    Former resident — The man who will direct and control the operation of Constitution Plaza, Inc. in building a $40 million new office center in downtown Hartford, Conn., grew up in a town that has no office buildings higher than three stories. Roger C. Wilkins, vice president of Travelers Insurance Co. and an expert in the real estate field was born and raised in Houlton.
    Mars Hill — The 50-star flag — its fiftieth star for the State of Hawaii, whose cluster of islands is the Union’s western extremity will fly first over the easternmost State of Maine. The first time flag can be flown officially at dawn on July 4th atop the 1,661-foot Mars Hill mountain.
    High School’s Best —Houlton would be the first Aroostook County town to host the All-State Music Festival. Joseph Tufts and Miss Ruth Mooers of the Houlton High School music department will assist with the event.

    State title — The Houlton High girls will be in the Augusta Civic Center to make their fourth attempt to win a State Class B basketball championship, while Katahdin High boys will in Bangor in search of their second State title in Class C.
    Jazz Festival — Bob Bahr, vocal music director at Houlton High will host the district jazz festival. Teresa Haggerty, Lewis Cleale and Jason Willard will be featured vocal soloists, while Mary Inman, Darrell Crandall and Carrie Holden will be instrumental soloists.
    Chamber president — The Houlton Chamber of Commerce has elected Paul Adams of Merrill Bank as president for the coming year. Serving with him will be Michael Clark as vice president and Jon McLaughlin as treasurer.
    Monticello — Violet Wilson was honored for 70 years’ of membership with the Grange.
