Beavers salvage softball season

WASHBURN — Softball in Washburn almost struck out before the season began. With only a handful of players confirmed for the upcoming season, coach Tammy Tatlock feared she would not have enough to field a team.
Fortunately, enough athletes stepped forward in the past week for the sixth-year coach to feel confident that the season will be a success.
Members of the Washburn roster include seniors Amber Reed (infield) and Jordan Chandler (infield/outfield); juniors Meghan Sauicer (pitcher), Hillary Jackson (infield/outfield), Amanda Libby (infield/outfield), Makayla Ronco (outfield), Lindsey Blackstone (outfield) and Anna Carlson (outfield); sophomores Kristi Sperrey (infield), Marlaina Spooner (outfield), Tia Dee (outfield), Marcy Cheviot (outfield) and Breanna Hyde (outfield); and freshman Rayah Saucier (catcher).
Of this group, Meghan Saucier, Sperrey, Dee, Jackson, Chandler and Libby are returning players.
“Our outlook is to have fun and play hard each and every game,” Tatlock said.
With the Saucier sisters, Washburn will have an interesting pitcher-catcher sister combination on the diamond this season. The two are expected to be key members for the Beavers. Libby, Jackson and Sperry should also be solid contributors.
The Beavers finished 1-15 a year ago and did not qualify for the playoffs.
“We are running a bit behind schedule due to a lack of interest, but have pulled together and are looking forward to a fun and fulfilled season of new faces on the field,” Tatlock said.
Washburn opens its season Tuesday, April 27 hosting Wisdom at 4 p.m.
