Owls’ record falls to 2-20

    The losses continue to pile up for the University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team, as the squad dropped all eight games its played over the past two weeks and are now 2-20 overall. 

    The Owls took on Fisher College to begin Sunrise Conference play this past weekend.
    Local pitchers Ian Towle and Brian Andrews, both of Fort Fairfield, and Clint Carter of Washburn were the pitchers in the 11-1 game-one loss on Saturday. Tyler Delaney of Truro, Nova Scotia went 3 for 3 and Josh Conroy of Dover managed the only RBI for UMPI.
    In game two, the Owls fell by an 8-2 margin. UMPI scored both runs in the second inning, as James Cirell of Bingham had an RBI single and another hit later in the contest.
    On Sunday, the first game saw UMPI lose, 17-4. The Owl offense was able to muster 10 hits, with Conroy and Ryan Hill of Houlton both going 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.         Fisher clinched the four-game sweep with an 8-2 triumph in Sunday’s nightcap. Conroy and Cody Humphrey of New Gloucester each had hits for the Owls.
    On April 2 and 3, the Owls ventured to Waterville for a three-game series against the Colby Mules. UMPI suffered three lopsided losses by scores of 13-0, 16-0 and 13-0. Conroy, D.J. Charette of Millinocket, Fillebrown and Thorne were among the UMPI players to hit safely in the series as the Owls mustered just nine hits in the three games.
    On Friday, the team took on Castleton State in a non-league single game played in Castleton, Vt., and the hosts pounded out 22 hits in the 23-3 victory.
    Corey Harding of Plymouth had an RBI double and Cirell a two-run single as the Owls scored all their runs in the sixth inning.
    Coach Leo Saucier’s team faces another busy road stretch, with a game at UM-Farmington Thursday, another at Southern Vermont College Friday and Sunrise Conference doubleheaders against Vermont Tech Saturday and Sunday.
