Washburn firefighters welcome new truck

WASHBURN — The long-awaited arrival of Washburn’s new fire truck occurred on Wednesday, April 7.
The truck is a much-needed addition to the department.
“The department is confident that this apparatus will service the communities of Washburn, Wade and Perham long into the future. It is a 2010 International engine truck with a four-door, five-man cab,” said Washburn Fire Chief Troy Heald.
According to Heald, the truck can carry 1,200 gallons of water and has a deck gun and six hand lines (hoses). It also comes complete with an automatic transmission and an on-board computer system. It replaces the 1975 Mack which could not be feasibly repaired. The new truck brings the department equipment up to code.
“The new truck was built at Metalfab of Centerville, N.B., and purchased through K and T Environment with owner Tom York assisting the Washburn Fire Department to get such a good truck for such a good price,” explained Heald.
During a town meeting in December of 2009, the residents of Washburn voted to authorize the department to spend up to $290,000 for a replacement truck. With the diligence of the department and assistance from K and T, the department got this new truck for $217,317.
The members of Washburn’s Fire and Rescue Department are extending an invitation to one and all to come see the new addition and to get a chance to check out the new truck and meet the crew. It will take place on Saturday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Washburn fire station.
“The Washburn Fire and Rescue wish to relay their great appreciation to the citizens of Washburn, Wade and Perham, as well as the Washburn Town Council, for their roles in acquiring the new 2010 fire truck,” said Heald.
The town of Washburn was also credited with recognizing the valuable service the fire department and its firemen provide to the tri-community area and extends the community’s appreciation to them.
