Aroostook Times
Of local interest — Several toy fire balloons were sent up by boys Saturday evening and as they passed over the town, many thought it to be the long lost comet.
Smyrna Mills — Rev. H.H. Marr preached two able sermons recently. The people who do not get out to hear Mr. Marr will never forgive themselves after the opportunity is gone.
Monticello — The Stevens Co. will show “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” in the Grange Hall next Friday evening, June 3rd.
Houlton — Mr. S.L. White returned Monday from a successful fishing trip to Square Lake.
Rides — Commencing June first, Henry W. Curtis will run a public automobile and is ready to take parties in any direction for any length of time. Those desiring his services phone 1-1-4.

Houlton — Norman Mullen of Bangor was selected from a long list of applicants for the position of superintendent of the Houlton Water Co. Mullen will assume the position left vacant by the resignation of B.B. McIntyre.
Advice to brides — A home economics expert gave the following advice to brides: “Learn to cook like your mother-in-law, even to making the gravy thick if she did. Never make a practice of asking your husband what he wants to eat; learn to know what he likes. Never waste anything in the kitchen, not even a prune, for a husband admires an efficient wife.”

Graduation — The Spring term kindergarten classes of Mrs. Ralph Porter held their closing day exercises at her home on Green Street. Mrs. Porter, who has been instructing youngsters for 30 years, welcomed the mothers, grandmothers and friends of the little boys and girls and a social hour was enjoyed. In the morning class the band was led by David Gordon and Brian Stewart on the drums and Mary Gormley and Jane Abbott on the cymbals.
President — Gerald Jackins was elected president of the Houlton Jaycees. Serving with him are Gordon Duncan, Robert Ivey, Dale Anthony and Dave Flemington.
Farewell party — Arnold A. Day of Monticello was guest of honor at the Mars Hill Grammar School where he taught the eighth grade the past year and also subjects in various grades. Mr. Day, who will retire from teaching was presented a money tree and several other gifts from his many friends in Monticello and Mars Hill.

NURSERY SCHOOL — The 1985 Nursery School class of Houlton High School was conducted May 14-30 for children ages three to five, by Home Economics students in Grades 9 through 12. SAD 29 — The budget to be presented, as approved by the Directors of SAD 29 at their meeting in April, amounts to $4,371,041.33, for the K-12 program and $107,460 for Adult Education.
Athletic award — The Leslie Collier Award, for the All-Around Athlete in 1985 at Hodgdon High School was presented to Jon McGuire by Athletic Director Steve Fitzpatrick.
Open House — Rod and Candy Herring, owners of Hairworks Studio will celebrate their recent expansion with an open house.
Celebrate — “Celebrate Lifetime Achievements” was the 1985 National Nursing Home Week theme. It served as a reminder to everyone in the community that nursing home residents want to share their many experiences with family and neighbors. Madigan Estates provided several opportunities to honor the residents and staff. One of the highlights of the celebration was dance night with special guests Fran and Ron Clukey.
