HOULTON, Maine — A rainy Saturday could not keep scores of Greater Houlton Christian Academy students, families, and friends from riding anywhere from two to one hundred miles at the school’s recent annual Bike-a-thon. This is the school’s largest fundraising event, with over $20,000 raised this year in spite of the weather. Funds raised help fill the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating a student at the Academy.
In addition to riding bikes, students and families enjoyed activities such as the “ball-drop” (a bag of colored and numbered balls are dropped from a fire truck and collected by students to exchange for over $500 in gifts) and a cash booth (a student stands in a “bubble” and tries to grab dollar bills while the cash is blown around inside). Students enjoyed free ice cream and pastries. The day concluded with a public supper at the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum in Littleton.
Students won a variety of prizes and qualified for random drawings of some great prizes.
Top Fundraisers —1, Kody Gates, $1,8053 (iPad); 2, Sam Carmichael $1,007 ($250 gift card); and 3, Alyssa and Kathryn Nightingale, $846 each (Funtown trips).
Most Sponsors — 1, Bailey Donovan, 54 sponsors ($100 gift card); and 2, Sam Geary, 50 sponsors ($100 gift card).
Random Drawings — Teagan Ewings (iPad); Rachel Hatfield ($250 gift card); Wesley Ganglefinger (Super Ice Cream certificate) and Bailey Donovan (Ice Cream certificate).
The Academy appreciates the community’s support in so many ways that helped make the event a great success.
