Summerfest 5K run/walk Saturday

The popular Island Falls Summerfest 5K run (or 4K walk) will be held this Saturday in Island Falls.
From the outset in 1992, this race has been fun, interesting, and unique, said organizer John Walker. The loop course offers a mostly flat terrain, a large and exuberant group of spectators, and, of course, the delicious homemade pies for the prizes. Plus, proceeds from this event go to two very worthy organizations, the local Agape Food Pantry and Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
For the last several years, the number of participants has been just under 100, making this race the largest in the County.      “It would be great to top the 100 mark this year,” added Walker.
Anyone may register the day of the race between 7:30 and 8:45 a.m.. The first 96 participants will receive Island Falls Summerfest T-shirts. There will be over $2,000 in door prizes again this year, as well.
A half-mile fun run is held at 8:45 a.m. for youth under age 10. Both the 4K walk and 5K run start at 9 a.m.
Following the race, the enjoyment continues as the remainder of the pies and other homemade desserts are auctioned off.      “Bring the family and enjoy the morning in Island Falls … even if you are not a participant, it’s a really good time,” Walker said.
