On Sunday, Aug. 22, a few hardy and adventurous souls decided to make their way down the Aroostook River from Diamond Flats in Wade to the Thomas Brewer Memorial Boat Landing in Washburn. Entrants included: Donald McCrossin, Aaron Bragg, Scott Galipeau, Christa Galipeau, Glenda Capps and Carroll Bragg — all in kayaks; along with Chris and Chad Tuttle experiencing the events in a canoe.
The length of the race covered approximately six miles along the scenic Aroostook River and the quickest time was one hour and 14 minutes, with the longest time being one hour and 34 minutes.
All participants earned first-place trophies and T-shirts. Participants noted they had a grand time and plan on coming again next year. A large number of door prizes were drawn, and the Trail Runners wish to thank all donors for their assistance and support. Appreciation also goes out to all the members of the Trail Runners who helped make this a fun event and a welcome addition to Washburn’s August Festival.

Washburn Rotary will be holding a garage sale on Saturday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 18. It will be held in the former Maynard’s Garage, currently White’s Service, directly across Main Street from the gas station. Donations will be gratefully accepted, and they can be left at White’s Service or phone Charlotte Griffin at 455-8498 or e-mail cgriffin@mail2maine.com to arrange for pick-up of items. Proceeds of sales will be used by Washburn Rotary for local projects throughout the year.
The scheduled pick-up date for Friendly Coop is Friday, Sept. 10, from noon until 8 p.m., with orders needing to be picked up during these hours.
The next scheduled food sale put on by the Lidstone Memorial Methodist Church will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Washburn Civic Center. The sale will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and will include delicious homemade cooking with everything from beans and bread to salads, cole slaw, cookies, cakes and pies.
Plan ahead for the annual fall meeting of the Salmon Brook Historical Society to be held at the Washburn Civic Center on Thursday, Sept 30. The potluck supper will start at 6 p.m. and followed by a business meeting. Participants are asked to bring a main dish, salad, dessert or rolls and their own place settings.
On Tuesday, Aug. 24, members of Washburn Dow Post 48 of the American Legion, Washburn Boy Scout Troop 177 and the Washburn Rotary hosted the annual flag retirement ceremony at Story Hill Park.
There was a good crowd on hand and the evening began with the Rotary Club providing a tasty hotdog roast complete with chips and sodas for participants and guests attending.
Troop 177 opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and the American Legion members inspected all flags to ensure they were beyond serviceable repair and were ready for disposal.
Commander Kermit Fuller and Scoutmaster Larry Harrison presided over the ceremony as Pastor Sue Brown gave the prayer. Rotarian Keith Brown and Washburn School Band Director Sean Diette played “echoing” taps. The Scouts brought each flag in front of the disposal vessel for final presentation before they were retired.
