GROVELAND, MA – Joseph Thomas Gormley, 91, died peacefully Monday evening, September 20, 2010, at The Oxford in Haverhill, MA, with his loving family by his side. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 8, 1919, son of the late Dominick and Mary (Derringer) Gormley, he graduated from Northeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia.
A proud military career man of the United States Air Force, he served during World WW II and the Korean Conflict, honorably discharged on October 31, 1962, after 20 years of service with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was a member and past Commander of the V.F.W. of Presque Isle, and a member of the Georgetown, MA V.F.W.
Mr. Gormley was an insurance agent with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company from 1961 to 1978.
In addition to his beloved wife of 62 years, Pauline M. (Hussey) Gormley of Groveland, MA, he leaves behind three sons, Joseph G. Gormley and wife, Yvonne of East Greenwich, RI, James E. Gormley and wife, Susan of Newbury, MA, and Calvin M. Gormley and wife, Nancy of Rowley, MA; a daughter, Cathleen M. Bergh and husband, Herbert A. of Haverhill, MA; seven grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Eric, Vanessa, Patrick, Amelia, Guy, Ashleigh and Kayleigh; his sister, Sister Marie G. Jamesine of Cherry Hill, NJ; a brother, Edward Gormley of Philadelphia; brother-in-law, Bernard Hussey of Easton; along with several nieces, nephews and extended family of Presque Isle.
Visiting hours at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 334 Main Street, Haverhill, were on Monday, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. immediately followed by a service at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Interment services were held at Riverview Cemetery, Groveland. Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 395 Main Street, Haverhill, MA 01830.
