PAINTINGS SUCH AS THIS ONE by Perham artist Jennifer Johnson will be on display at the Wintergreen Arts Center in Presque Isle from Oct. 1-30. An opening reception for Johnson will be held Friday, Oct. 1 from 7-9 p.m. at the arts center. Johnson’s paintings are inspired by nature, color, composition and light.

Johnson is a local artist and resident of Perham. She and her family moved to Perham eight years ago from Massachusetts, where her interest in art began at an early age. As a child, she was happy to spend her time with crayons and pencils. In high school, Johnson developed her artistic skills and creativity by taking a variety of art classes in drawing, painting and ceramics. She earned her bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. This is her first solo exhibit since her college graduation in 2007.
Her paintings are inspired by nature, color, composition and light. They are meant to evoke a feeling or emotional response in the viewer.
“The paintings are meant to be more about color and atmosphere than landscape. Each one started out as simple color play,” she said. Trees are a recurring theme in her artwork, and while most of these are current works, some of the paintings date back to 2005.
Wintergreen Arts Center is hosting her opening reception as part of the First Friday Art Walk, which is a new cultural opportunity in downtown Presque Isle. Downtown businesses and organizations invite visitors to take a self-guided stroll through the downtown and the University of Maine at Presque Isle galleries to hear live music, meet local authors and artists, and experience the heart of our community. Participating organizations include the Turner Memorial Library Gallery, Wintergreen Arts Center, Merchants on the Corner, Café Sorpreso, Morning Star Art & Framing, the Downtown Revitalization Committee, Freddy P’s, the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce and UMPI. First Friday Art Walk is an event where people can meet, unwind, and enjoy the arts on the first Friday of each month between 5-9 p.m.
