Last week started nice from a weather point of view, but some torrential downpours spoiled soccer action late in the week.
In grades 5-6 play last Tuesday, the Mutiny defeated the Express, 4-1, behind two quick goals by Gavin Kelley and another to follow by Connor McManus – his first of the season. Late in the first half, a Tyler Levesque pass led to an Isaac Madore goal which put the Express on the board. However, the Mutiny’s Madison Bearden secured the victory with a goal.
The Sting came through with a 4-0 shutout win over the Rapids. Sting goalie Adam Paterson held the Rapids off the scoreboard, with Randon Mortland and R.J. Gross netting two goals each for the winners. Sarah Morneault and Emma Beaulieu assisted on Mortland’s scores, while Mortland had the assists in both of Gross’s tallies. Griffen Guerrette and David Kofstad played well for the Rapids.
Tuesday’s final game ended in a 1-1 tie between the Clash and the Crew. The Clash struck first when Ryle Mortland slammed the ball into the net off a beautiful through ball off the foot of Jordan Bonville. Clash goalie Colin Daigle was a machine in goal in the first half, stopping seven shots. In the second half of play, it was the Crew’s turn to control the game. Denny Young, the Crew’s team leader, made a fantastic throw-in all the way into the box, which Josh Baldwin put a head on and placed into the back of the net to knot the score. The Crew’s Emily Wheaton, Grant Stewart and Camden Bates have been fantastic leaders and hard workers throughout the season and turned in fine performances.
The final standings in the fifth- and sixth-grade league are as follows: first place, Sting; second, Rapids; third, Clash; fourth, Mutiny; fifth, Crew; and sixth, Express.
Third and fourth-graders took to the field last Wednesday. First on the docket was a match between the Hurricanes and Blizzard. The Hurricanes’ Libby Moreau scored the only goal in the contest late in the second half to give her team the victory. Sophia Lambert was a defensive machine for the Hurricanes, while Jessica Shaw, Molly Kingsbury and Eleanor St. Peter played great for the Blizzard.
The Tornados then faced off against the Galaxy. The first half was dominated by the Tornados, with Amelia Theriault and Claire Hopkins scoring a goal each to put their team up 2-0. After a half-time discussion with the Galaxy from their coach, Savannah Rodriguez took matters into her own hands by scoring a hat trick in the second half and finishing the game in goal as her team came back for the 3-2 victory. Leila Fonbuena was full of hustle throughout the game, which helped keep Galaxy’s intensity level up.
In the final game of the day, the Drillers and Missiles took to the field and played to a 2-2 tie. The Missiles’ Chris Bearden scored first with an amazing pass from Zech Morse to put their team up quickly. Firing back was the Driller’s Austin Plourde, who received a cross from Jacob Bonville to tie up the heated battle. Bearden wanted to pull ahead when Thomas Patenaude led Bearden into scoring territory and Bearden blasted the ball near post for his second goal. The Drillers weren’t to fond of being behind and showed it when Khyler Caron blasted the ball into the zone and Trace Cyr finished the play off by placing it nicely past the goalie for the game’s final goal.
