With “Attitude is everything” as their motto, students enrolled in the Food Service Program at the Caribou High School Technology Center hosted a grand opening of the Viking Korner Kitchen, their fast food diner, on Oct. 14. Under the supervision of instructor JuaNita Campbell, students prepared and served a traditional luncheon favorite of chicken stew with ployes to CHS staff members, parents and friends.
The popular Viking Korner is decorated in retro-style, creating a warm atmosphere for students and diners alike. Diners have a choice of being seated at one of the fully set tables or at the lunch counter.
All participants in the program have successfully passed their safety test and have received their 2010 food service license stated Campbell. “The Viking Korner Kitchen, in room 157 at the Caribou Technology Center, is open daily from 10:45 -11:30 a.m. We encourage staff, parents and small community groups to join us for lunch,” said Campbell. “The students depend upon local support in order for them to practice the necessary skills required in the workforce,” she added, “the Food Service Program has been successful since its commencement more than 35 years ago.”
Following the annual grand opening of the Viking Korner Kitchen, students commented that they had learned a lot and realized that their customers liked their cooking. One member of the class stated that her parents had joined her for lunch and now they will let her prepare a meal at home. The students also had time to sit, share and taste their own cooking.
In offering her thanks to her colleagues and others who came to have their lunch at the grand opening, Campbell said, “It’s not all about profit — you can not place a dollar amount on the experiences that these students receive by being enrolled in this program.”
