Washburn’s Canales at school

Army Spec. Adam J. Canales has graduated from the Special Forces Candidate One-Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
During the first 14 weeks of basic infantry training, the private first class received training in drill and ceremony, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military customs and courtesies, military justice, physical fitness, road marches, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills, and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
After completing basic infantry training, the soldier will complete airborne school with a subsequent assignment to Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C., to prepare for and attend the Special Forces Qualification Course as a weapons sergeant or engineer sergeant.
During the 20-25 month training period, the soldier will have graduated from airborne school, the Primary Leadership Development Course: the Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course; survival, evacuation, resistance and escape training; and language school. Upon graduation from all phases of training, the soldier will be assigned and promoted to a Special Forces weapons sergeant or engineer sergeant.
Canales is the son of Joel Canales Jr. of Presque Isle.
The specialist graduated in 1999 from Washburn District High School and earned a master’s degree in 2010 from Husson University, Bangor.

Christmas ‘angels’

Be sure and pick up your “paper angels” at the Perham Post Office and the Perham Town Office. These gifts will make Christmas a little brighter for some area children. The deadline for returning them with a Christmas gift is Wednesday, Dec. 15. Gifts of money, wrapping paper and tape will also be appreciated.
There will be a meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the Civic Center starting at 6:30 p.m. for discussing a booklet format covering Washburn history. This will be a “brainstorming” session, and volunteers are invited to come and bring their ideas including old photos, trivia, Washburn historical research, family stories and organizational skills. It is hoped that the booklet can be completed in time for the Sesquicentennial celebrations during the annual August Festival. Boy Scout fundraiser

Troop 177 is currently selling Christmas trees, and the cost for any size — 5-, 6-, 7- and perhaps even 8-foot ones — is $25. They are on display at the home of Scout Leader Ron Rand on the Washburn/Presque Isle Road. There will be local delivery available on Saturdays for the Washburn, Wade, Perham and Crouseville areas. This annual fundraising event helps programs throughout the year for Boy Scouts in Troop 177, and they thank you in advance for assisting them.

Senior citizen trip

Eight ladies from the Washburn Rec Center Senior Citizens’ Group recently toured the Fort Fairfield Border Patrol Station. Those attending included Sylvia Wardwell, Drucilla Turner, Margaret Barker, CeCe Rossignol, Bernadette Rossignol, Arlene Cole and Wilda Goodall. They were shown an informative PowerPoint presentation on what the current Border Patrol is about and how the agents became patrolmen of the Department of Homeland Security. The presentation was followed by an interesting tour of the facility which appeared to be enjoyed by all.
After the tour, the ladies went to lunch at Fort Fairfield’s “Boondocks” restaurant.
