Washburn fall athletes garner recognition
WASHBURN – Washburn District High School held its annual Fall Sports Awards program at the Camille “Doc” Albert Gymnasium Nov. 16.
Senior cross country runner Cameron Huston welcomed everyone in attendance. Athletic Director Ron Ericson thanked parents, the athletes and the staff for their efforts during the season.

MULTIPLE AWARDS – Jordan McLaughlin picked up three soccer awards – MVP, All-Aroostook and a plaque noting his school goal scoring record.
Marcie Barbarula, girls’ soccer coach, and her assistant, Scott Olson, presented letters to Taylor Thompson-Blackstone, Nicole Olson, and Caitlyn Roix. Receiving pins were manager Kyle McLaughlin, Tia Dee, Megan Saucier, Kelsey Churchill, Kristi Sperrey, Rebecca Campbell, Lindsey Blackstone, Hillary Jackson, Sarah Sjoberg, Maegan Fitzpatrick, Olivia Doody, Carsyn Koch, Rayah Saucier, Kennedy Churchill and Carmen Bragg. Three-year plaques were awarded to McLaughlin, Jackson, Sjoberg, Kelsey Churchill and Sperrey.
Saucier was named Most Valuable Player, Lindsey Blackstone was named Most Improved Player. Koch was awarded Rookie of the Year. Sjoberg was awarded the Coaches’ Award. Koch, Bragg and Saucier were recognized for being named All-Aroostook and also All-Eastern Maine.
Ben Goodwin, boys’ soccer coach, presented letters to Kyle Hews and Keagan Page. Receiving pins were Nick Bragg, Mitch Worcester, Justin Farley, and Sean Sperrey, Chris Farley, Connor Fitzpatrick, Kyle Huston, Chase Chandler, Zach Davis, Jordan McLaughlin, Jacob Reed, Mason Turner, Andrew McLaughlin, Ethan Pendexter, Anthony Viola and managers Dakota Koch and Owen James. Three-year plaques were awarded to Chandler, Davis, McLaughlin, Reed, Turner and Viola.
McLaughlin and Bragg were named Most Valuable Players. Kyle Huston was awarded the Coaches’ Award and Viola was named the Most Improved Player. McLaughlin, Worcester and Bragg received recognition for being named All-Aroostook. Worcester received a plaque for setting a school record for assists and McLaughlin was recognized for breaking the school record for goals in a season with 30.

McLaughlin was also presented the Butch Shaw Award for being named the outstanding soccer player in Aroostook County for boys in Class D. Larry Worcester from the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials made the presentation.
Cross country coach Mike Waugh and assistant coach Sean Diette presented cross country certificates to Nicole Olson and Garth Kinney. Receiving letters were Anna Carlson, Carsyn Koch, Carmen Bragg, and Kevin Carlson. Receiving pins were Cameron Huston, Kyle Huston, Nick Bragg and Kyle McLaughlin. Named Coaches’ Award winners for boys and girls were Anna Carlson and Cameron Huston. Nick Bragg was named the outstanding boys’ runner and Carsyn Koch was named the outstanding girls’ runner. Koch will have picture in the trophy case in honor of her being a state champion. She and Bragg received jackets in honor of their first- and third-place finishes in the state cross country meet.
Ericson presented a special varsity fleece to Sjoberg in recognition of her having received her eighth varsity letter. Earning fleeces for having received four varsity letters for soccer were Chris Farley, Kyle Huston, Dakota Koch, Connor Fitzpatrick and Lindsey Blackstone.
