Special to
Cat sale!! The Central Aroostook Humane Society is full to the brim with cats and we want them in good, responsible, loving homes, not in cages in our shelter.

VOLUNTEERS at the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle were recently recognized during a luncheon held at the Nordic Heritage Center. Pictured in front from left are: Bunny Miller, Crystal Belanger, Marcus Shorey holding Cheyenne Michaud and Rosanna Belanger. In back: Julie Corey, Dan Corey, Helen Palmer, Joe Cheney, Rosie Ouellette, James Miller, Judy Gahagan, Shandie Page (Cheyenne’s mother), Lydia Clark, Rose Michaud, Joe Ruggles, Rick Brown and Tracy Michaud.
We have decided to have a HUMUNGUS sale on cat adoptions, so instead of paying the full price of $65 for an altered cat, each adoption for any cat at our shelter is only $20, altered or not. For unaltered cats you must leave a $100 deposit that is refunded after you bring us proof of altering, as mandated by the state of Maine. That is quite a bargain!
When we get too many cats in a building, like the shelter, the outbreak of URI can wipe out the whole population. We are dangerously close to maximum capacity unfortunately and are hoping beyond hope that people will come and adopt cats! This sale will continue until an adequate number of cats have found loving, forever homes, thinning out our population and making cage space in the shelter.
Folks, spring isn’t here yet, kitten season isn’t here, and we are jam packed. Please consider adopting today.

DONATION MADE — Officials with from the Aroostook Centre Mall recently made a donation to benefit the animals of the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle, donating dog food, cat litter, bleach, dish soap, towels, cat food, pet treats, and treats for staff, as well as $50 in mall gift cards for the staff to eat on them. Pictured making the donation are, from left: Mall Manager Patti Crooks and Wendy McKenney, mall office manager.
We also have five rabbits at the Central Aroostook Humane Society. Rabbits make wonderful pets; they can be housebroken and live in your home. February was Adopt a Shelter Rabbit Month, but these are at our shelter now! Do your homework before adopting a rabbit so you can be a responsible rabbit owner.0
Dogs — let’s talk about our dog population. We have had one side of our kennel under quarantine for weeks now due to dogs that were seized by the state who were infected with giardia, a parasite that lives in the small intestine. The dogs are Alaskan huskies and are a well-trained dog sled team. Along with this team of dogs comes two liters of puppies. All dogs and puppies have a clean bill of health and are ready for adoption.
We have other dogs available as well: two puppies 3-4 months old that came in as strays, a hound and a boxer hound, an adult boxer/lab mix named Nelson who is absolutely wonderful but very energetic, a female chow mix named Emmy who was abandoned in our play yard on a cold January night, and a 9-year-old female beagle who came to the shelter with her litter of puppies. These dogs need responsible, loving homes.
Good news — Maggie May has found a loving, forever home!! We had a wonderful person generously sponsor her stay with us, which helped out tremendously. Let’s hope for the best and that she will live happily ever after!
As you know, we were working hard to raise $5,000 to spay and neuter cats at our shelter. We raised about $2,500 of that, and a challenge has been sent to a local business which could possibly raise $1,000 more. Clare Kierstead, a longtime supporter of CAHS, has challenged a local business to match his donation of $500 … we are holding our breath hoping they meet his challenge. I will keep you posted!
Emergency supplies are needed at the shelter. We are running low on basic necessities. With this many animals in house, we are desperately low on the following items that we use daily:
• Purina Cat Chow;
• Purina Dog Chow;
• Pedigree puppy food;
• Bleach;
• Laundry detergent;
• Non-scoopable cat litter; and
• Paper towels.
If you can donate any of these items, it would be greatly appreciated. These are items that we use and run out of quickly — basic supplies. Money is very tight at the shelter right now; donations are way down and we are barely surviving. This winter has been a cruel one; all expenses are up and the pet population is up! Won’t you help?
If you are looking for a friend for life, visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, or give us a call at 764-3441.
Please have your pets spayed or neutered.
