ASHLAND — A weekend altercation between two Ashland brothers left one hospitalized while the other is behind bars.
A family argument between Robert Bowring, 27, and his younger brother, Chris Bowring, also reported to be in his 20s, escalated late Saturday, with the elder brother allegedly attacking his sibling with a knife.
The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. March 5, with police responding a short time later.
“The brothers, who both live with their parents in Ashland, began arguing at the home. The fight quickly escalated, with Robert Bowring stabbing his brother with a knife during the altercation,” said Ashland Police Chief Cyr Martin.
Chris Bowring was transported by Ashland Ambulance Service to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle, then flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, as a precaution, for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Information on his condition was not available at presstime.
Robert Bowring was taken into custody and transported by Martin and Patrolman Luke Toomey to the Presque Isle Police Department for processing shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday. He was charged with elevated aggravated assault, a Class A crime, and could face 10 years or more in prison and an unspecified fine. Bail was set at $10,000 cash or $75,000 surety. Unable to make bail, Robert Bowring was transported by Toomey to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton, where he remained as of Tuesday. The D.A.’s Office was awaiting paperwork on the case Tuesday and no court date was specified.
“This is considered a domestic incident. It’s not up to the victim to bring charges; the state determines that in domestic cases,” said Martin.
Martin received assistance from the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office.
