100 Years Ago – March 22, 1911
Aroostook Times

    New store — John A. Millar has opened a Wholesale Confectionery department in the store in his block formerly occupied by Merritt’s Shoe Store, making a very convenient addition to this rapidly growing branch of his business.
    Ludlow — Mr. Carlton Hemore is home from Ludlow Station where he has been hauling pulp for Mr. Adams.
75 Years Ago – March 19, 1936

    Madigan home — Awakened about four Monday morning by the crackle and roar of flames outside his bedroom door, James C. Madigan arose to investigate. He aroused his three sons and maid sleeping on the third floor. They with Miss Malee Madigan, a daughter who was sleeping on the second floor, took refuge in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Pierce across the street. The house and its contents were a complete wreck with the center of the house being destroyed and water and smoke in all the rooms.
    New business — Paul Jackins, who recently resigned his connection with Albert E. Mooers has this week organized his own company to be known as Paul Jackins, Inc., to deal in Aroostook County table and seed potatoes and to act as agent for Summers Fertilizer.
50 Years Ago – March 23, 1961
Houlton Pioneer Times

    DeMolay — John Albert Davis, 17, of Houlton, has been selected as the outstanding DeMolay in Maine by the International Supreme Council of the Order of the DeMolay and will receive a Distinguished Service Medal.
    High School — The Houlton High School one-act play cast won the sectional contest held at Hodgdon High School. Named for individual performances were Ruthann Van Tasel, Robert Blanchette, Barbara McGillicuddy, Betty Thompson and Larry Hall.
    Announcement — The Northland Hotel directors issued a statement indicating the majority of the owners would not sanction the sale of the hotel for any other purpose than as a hotel.
    Girl Scouts — Two curved pins, the highest award in Scouting in the Intermediate Class were presented to Barbara Newton and Dawn Barton.
25 Years Ago – March 19, 1986

    Approved — Houlton voters at the annual election approved a $1,385,000 bond issue to repair and replace storm drains, streets and sidewalks in the downtown area.

The trophy for the Most Valuable Player, which is voted by the players, was awarded to Paul Deveau, second from left, by Coach Rick Baietti, left, who donated the trophy. Dr. Ivan Wilson, third from left, donated and presented the Commissioners Trophy to Chris Eastham.

    July 4th — Two musical groups have been secured for this year’s July festivities. They are, Bill Street Jazz Quintet and Cabin Country.
    Crash — A twin-engine plane piloted by Everett Westerman and carrying U.S. mail touched down at the Houlton International Airport and then skidded off the runway into a snowbank. The pilot sustained no injuries, but several mailbags destined for Presque Isle, Grand Isle and Fort Kent Mills were damaged.
