Walk to benefit M.A.D.D. is April 9

HOULTON, Maine — The second annual Walking Like M.A.D.D., in memory of Houlton High School alum Darcie C. Hutchinson will be held Saturday, April 9 at 2 p.m. Hutchinson was killed by a drunk driver in 1996 at the age of 21.
“Despite the short notice and cold weather, we had a good turnout last year so let’s make it more this year,” said event coordinator Heather McCarthy.
The walk is held in conjunction with a M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) walk that Hutchinson’s siblings — Nicole and Jasen — participate in as a fundraiser for the group.
“It is a wonderful cause, to help stop drunk driving and to remember all of the victims plus it will not cost you a thing, unless you choose to donate, which is always appreciated,” McCarthy said. “So, bring your family and friends and join us in walking around town, the walk will not last that long, but the memories will last forever. Make it an annual event with your family, school, church, sports team, whatever group you choose or come alone, it doesn’t matter, all walkers welcome.
“While walking in Houlton, Nicole and her crew will be walking in Raleigh, N.C. and together we will be ‘Walking like M.A.D.D.’ and remembering Darcie and anyone else who has been a victim of drunk driving,” McCarthy said. “All are encouraged to come, so bring your friends and family. Together with your support, we can help raise awareness and make a difference today as we remember Darcie’s smiling face.”
