A new family is touching the hearts of Halfway Home Pet Rescue volunteers. The entire affectionately named family — Mr. Joe Cool, Mrs. Josie Cool, and their sons, Jim, Jack and Jake — is currently residing at a foster home. Joe Cool has now been neutered, leukemia/AIDS tested, has received his distemper and rabies shots, been wormed and Revolutioned (parasite protection for 30 days). Joe is available for adoption for $30; Josie Cool will continue to raise their three kittens for another five weeks until the ‘kids’ are ready for adoption. Then after weaning her boys, Josie will be spayed and prepared for adoption. Josie and the boys will have an adoption fee of $50 each in May (although if two kittens are adopted together, the second kitten or cat is only $25). HHPR volunteers recommend keeping two kittens or two adult cats that have bonded together instead of separating them. “Truthfully, two cats are way more fun as they entertain each other as well as their human family,” said president of the Halfway Home Pet Rescue Norma Milton. “It would be nice if Joe and Josie could be together, but they are both very adjustable. We currently have several very nice adult cats and even though we continue to invest $150 to $200 into each cat, we are only charging $30 each until April 15.” All HHPR adult cats are Leukemia tested, spayed/neutered, wormed, received their distemper and rabies vaccinations, and are treated with Revolution before adoption. All kittens receive the 1st and/or 2nd distemper shot (depending on age), are wormed, treated with Revolution and leave the shelter with a spay/neuter voucher; kittens are adoptable for $50. HHPR is a 501c3 corporation, and a state of Maine Licensed Animal Shelter. “We offer viewing hours by appointment only as the shelter is in a private home as are the foster homes,” Milton said. “We have seen the start of kitten season  — nine very young ones in just 1 day — and are greatly in need Purina Kitten Chow, bleach and dirt cheap litter because kittens cannot use scoopable litter until they are about four months old.” The next delivery for the pet food pantry is scheduled for April 16.
