100 Years Ago-April 26, 1911
Aroostook Times

    Linneus — The stork visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Estabrook, Sunday, April 23, and left an infant daughter.
    Local — The April showers this year have all been snowstorms, which will do much toward taking the frost out of the ground and bringing about an early spring.
    Celebration — The Odd Fellows will celebrate their 92nd anniversary this week. Rockabema and Portia Rebekah will join in the ceremonies.
75 Years Ago-April 23, 1936

    Houlton — James Colton, local pilot had his plane out for the first time this year. He flew to Presque Isle where he is employed and was accompanied by Allston Conlogue.
    Island Falls — April 16th the weather conditions were unusual for Aroostook County, a heavy snowstorm, several inches in places, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Potatoes and peas, were planted in this vicinity March 31. If the eyes in the potato “see”, they will stay where they are a few days longer.
    Distinguished citizen — Colonel Frank Merton Hume, veteran of three wars — The Spanish War of 1898, Mexican Border, 1916 and World War, 1917 and also with a service record in Mexico during the Madeira Revolution in 1911 — was presented with a lifetime membership in the Chester L. Briggs Post.

    Lot of store — The Houlton Town Council voted Monday evening to offer to the Milliken-Tomilson Co. (IGA) of Portland, a 60-day option to buy the former Atlas Plywood property on North Street across the bridge.
    Mileage — The average driver in the Northeast section of the country taps his pocketbook to the tune of 15 cents for every mile he drives his car.

    Jaycees — Robert Ivey was elected as the new president of the Houlton Jaycees at the club’s annual meeting. Serving with him are Morris Cassidy, Gilbert Clark, Oden Cassidy, David Flemington, Bill Miller, Paul Ivey, Clifford Barker, Wayne Hutchinson, Rod Benware and Ed Wheyland.

    Award — For the second year in succession Sheryl Schillinger of Chadwick Florist has won the design contest sponsored by the Maine State Florists Association.
    Littleton — A new beauty shop, “Shear Country” located on the Framingham Road is now open for business. Sheila Cowperthwaite, owner and operator announces special introductory rates are now in effect.
    Houlton — The combination of ages totals 313 years of bowlers who are at the Hill-Top Lanes, rain, snow or sunshine every Monday and Friday morning. They are John Small, age 70; Roy White, age 83, Ora Mooers, age 85 and Fred Huggard, age 75.
