Getting into walking routine
By Christine Cowett Robinson

Spring is finally here! It’s time to get yourself and your dog into shape.
Please don’t think you will take your dog for a three-mile jog after they have done virtually nothing all winter long; work into it gradually. Our dogs are much like us in that they will feel the aches and pains of “overdoing it.” Now is the time to teach your dog to properly walk on a leash so that you are not the one whose dog drug them into traffic or taught you to lawn surf. I see it time and time again, owners who love their dogs but neglected to teach them while they were young and small, and now have a dog that not only outweighs them but also has no clue how to properly walk on a leash. Enroll in a good obedience class, get a good training book and ask for help before you or your dog gets seriously hurt.
When the warm weather hits, we usually see dogs unrestrained, riding in the back of pick-up trucks. That is illegal and should be reported — not only for the dog’s safety but also for the safety of other motorists. What if this dog loses his balance and ends up being thrown from the truck? Not only does the dog get injured, but possibly anyone in a vehicle around the dog. It is the law, no questions asked.
We are gearing up for lots of fun stuff to come. We will be participating in the Caribou City Wide Yard Sale on May 21. If you have gently-used items that you would like to donate, you can bring them to the shelter. We appreciate your help!!
The end of April means the end of our SUPER cat sale. Adopt a cat this week only for $20. Yes you heard it right. This sale has helped us to find homes for many wonderful cats, but unfortunately, with every adoption we have lost a lot of money. It costs us more than $20 to prepare these cats for adoption and we cannot afford to continue with our sale at this time. But we still have many wonderful cats looking for homes.
A Cat’s Prayer
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray this cushy life to keep.
I pray for toys that look like mice,
And sofa cushions, soft and nice.
I pray for gourmet kitty snacks,
And someone nice to scratch my back,
For windowsills all warm and bright,
For shadows to explore at night.
I pray I’ll always stay real cool
And keep the secret feline rule —
To NEVER tell a human that
The world is really ruled by CATS!

If you are looking for a friend for life, please visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We are open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or visit us online at www.centralaroostookhumane.org. You can also donate to CAHS on our website. If each person who reads this donated just one dollar, it would make a huge difference. We have one lovely person who has sent us $5 every week; they said they would send it each week until Maggie Mae got adopted. Maggie Mae has found a wonderful home; thank you for being so generous.
Please have your pets spayed or neutered.
