UMPI teams playoff bound
The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball and softball teams will compete for Sunrise Conference championships this weekend.
The UMPI baseball team, with a 2-9 league record and a 6-25 overall mark, makes the trip to Lynn, Mass. to play its first playoff game Friday.
The Owls’ softball team, at 8-2 in conference play and 12-11 overall, will compete for the league playoff title this weekend at Regis College in Weston, Mass.
In regular season action this past weekend, coach Leo Saucier’s UMPI Owls were beaten by SUNY-Canton in three games played Friday. The scores were 8-4, 5-2 and 6-0.
Ted Walker of Caribou had three hits in the first game to lead UMPI, which had nine in the contest. In the two games that followed, the Owls were limited to just three hits in each.
UMPI also lost to Colby-Sawyer Thursday in a non-conference game, 11-1.
The Owl softball team wrapped up regular season play with hard-fought 3-2 and 11-10 losses to the Roos of SUNY-Canton.
Krista Coffin led UMPI’s offense by going 2 for 2 in the opener. Coffin also did the pitching and surrendered just two earned runs in four innings of work. She left due to an injury in the fifth, giving way to reliever Emily Moore.
In the second game, Brittany Humphrey had three hits, three RBIs and scored two runs to lead the Owl attack.
