Loring Job Corps automotive students rolled up their sleeves and got their hands sudsy to raise money for the Japan disaster relief efforts. Participating students included, right side, from front: Nycholle Boober, Charles Ketch, Carra-ann Lee and DeLanee David. Left side, front row: Chris Pennell and Joevanny Ibarra. Back row: Keith O’Connor, Torray Parks, Derrick Robinson and Kyle Bernard.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. students of the center’s automotive department washed vehicles — mostly from the staff on center — and at the end of the day they’d raised $140 to assist with relief efforts.
As automotive students watched the events unfold in Japan and saw the extent of the devestation — homes swept away, people living without heat, food, water, coping with the loss of loved one — many have been able to personally relate to these experiences and expressed their concerns to instructors at the LJCC.
One student suggested that the automotive department hold a fundraiser and, with the assistance of donated materials by Carquest in Caribou, the students found a way to help those devastated by the earthquakes and tsunami in Japan, even though they’re thousands of miles apart.
“We are always looking for things we can do to support the community,” said automotive instructor Dana Jones.
