Happy Days senior citizens

The Easton Happy Days Club met for their regular meeting and a potluck lunch on Thursday, April 28th with 10 members and two guests, Tammy Delong and Charlene Lento of Presque Isle. After the meal Tammy Delong, Medicare specialist from the Aroostook Area on Aging, spoke to the group on the Medicare Buy-In Program. She explained what the program covered and who is eligible to receive it. She also was concerned that this would be one of the programs that would have some cuts when the final federal budget came out. This would be quite a loss for some seniors. If this bill is passed, it will lower the income limit for eligibility.

Delong also spoke on the Maine Center on Deafness which is a program that provides communication equipment for those who are hard of hearing, have vision loss, mobility disabilities, intellectual disabilities, speech impairments and other physical disabilities. There are several different types of phones that can help with these disabilities. One must meet income guidelines to receive the equpment. They should also make out an application to get their name on the phone delivery list.

She answered many questions the group asked and then told them that if they needed more information or help they could call her and make an appointment and she would help. Her number is (207) 764-3396.

Another guest, Charlene Lento, from Pines Health Service, was there just to hear and learn about what Delong spoke about.

Following the program, the President, Nina Trask, opened the meeting with the flag salute and the singing of “America the Beautiful” with Lianna Demerchant on the piano. The Treasurer, Ida Doak, was absent but sent in her report. It was accepted as read.

The Roll Call was taken with these members present: Nina Trask, Eldora Carter, Lianna Demerchant, John Trask, Rogena Thomas, Ezalee Smith, Arlene Ladner, Annette Copeland, Helen King and Marie Hewitt.

In the absence of the secretary last meeting, Helen King took down the minutes. They were read by the Secretary, Eldora Carter and accepted as read.

The president had a sign-up sheet for those who wished to take the trip to Oxbow to see the newborn buffalo in June and then have lunch at the Horn of Plenty in Houlton. The cost would be $10 and only 16 could be served. She spoke of the worry that the RSVP program might be at risk of being cut with the proposed budget cut. She urged those there to contact their Representatives and Senators to register their concern.

The next meeting will be held at the Manor rec room on Thursday, May 12th.

Softball in Easton

There has been interest expressed about having a co-ed adult summer softball league. We haven’t hammered out all the details; rather we will have sponsored teams or just a “pick-up” league. Please let me know if you have interest in participating or know someone who might. We would like to begin this league in May and have it end on Field Days weekend (July 9).
