Students recommend ESL Class
ESL (English as a Second Language) classes are being offered at the Houlton Higher Education Center (HHEC) this summer. The school is fortunate to have an experienced, veteran ESL teacher for the class.
Laurice Grass-Bell taught ESL classes in the Southwestern United States for 25 years to students from five continents at all levels. Grass-Bell grew up locally and graduated from Houlton High School. Her move from Maine to the Southwest precipitated her change of focus to ESL. Grass-Bell’s class is a blend of spoken and written work with many visual cues for students to work from.
Why would someone want to attend ESL class at HHEC? Here are some student answers to that question.
Jutima Levine wrote, “Never too late to study in the second language. This make my life wonderful in the United States.”
“We have a wonderful English teacher in my class,” responded Annie Ha.
Siu Lin Lau replied, “I think English is important to learn when you want to live in the United States.”
If you are interested in attending ESL class, or you know of someone who could benefit from attending, please contact the Houlton Hodgdon Adult Education office for more information and to register at 521-3100, extension 5.
Workshops for local high school grads
The Houlton Higher Education Center is offering three (9 a.m. to noon) workshops for 2011 local high school graduates – a Federal Financial Aid workshop on Tuesday June 7, Career Exploration on Wednesday June 8, and Resume Building on Thursday June 9.
These workshops will be taught by Teri Morse of the Maine Educational Opportunities Center (MEOC) and Peter Lento from the Maine Career Center. High school graduates who want more career information and college entrance information would benefit from these sessions. Registration is limited to 10, and students must commit to attend at least two of the three sessions when registering.
