WASHBURN NEWS

There was a special town meeting on Monday, May 23, with 25 townspeople and officials in attendance. Mike McIntosh was elected moderator and led the meeting in which a proposed new town garage was discussed.

A vote was taken and the selectmen were directed to negotiate and purchase one acre of land with building from Edward L. Clark, said parcel located at 6 Victoria Street, Washburn, for a price not to exceed $47,000. Upon purchase of said parcel, an addition will be added to the existing building of approximately 16 feet x 40 feet to be used as an office, and provided that the total cost of said addition shall not exceed $50,000.

The selectmen are authorized to borrow a principal amount not to exceed $97,000 for a term not to exceed 20 years on such terms as they deem in the best interests of the town to finance the land purchase and construction of an addition. The selectmen are also authorized to procure services and execute any contract or documents necessary to accomplish the actions in this article.

The selectmen were also authorized to sell the current town garage with .8 acres of land at 1 North Wade Road. All proceeds from this sale will be put toward the costs of the new garage and building addition. The sale of the town garage will be put out for bid.

Thanks to the generosity of the Washburn District High School’s National Honors Society, children from the David J. Lyon, Washburn District Elementary School were able to attend the recent Special Olympics at the SAD 1 Sports Complex with a new school banner and T-shirts. NHS members earned more than $400 in their effort to outfit the team. One NHS member, Lindsey Blackstone, designed the mascot for the shirts. Posing with the banner and wearing the T-shirts were, from left, front row: Deno Aegerter, Ed tech, Raegan Whipkey, Aneesah Sabatis, Brittany Brissette, Kylee Plummer, Rebecca Savoy, Michaela Tozier and Caden Viola.
