Koch grabs state track title

Washburn’s Carsyn Koch picked up the third state championship victory of her young high school career Saturday.

At McCann Field in Bath in the State Class C Track and Field Championship, Koch finished the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 26.94 seconds to win by a one-second margin over runner-up Chelsie Oldfield of Foxcroft Academy.

The win capped a brilliant year for the Beaver freshman, who had already won a cross country individual state title in the fall and was part of the state champion basketball team this past winter.

Koch also placed second in the 1,600-meter run during Saturday’s meet. Abby Mace of Maranacook won that event in 5:19.76, with Koch recording a time of 5:27.18.

Fort Fairfield had one athlete place in the meet. Katy Donovan was seventh in the discus with a throw of 88 feet.

Other Tiger female athletes qualifying were Kaitlyn Kinsey in the 100 hurdles and the triple jump, Logan Bubar in the 100 hurdles, the long jump, the discus and the javelin; Nicole Giberson in the 100 and the 400, the 4×100 relay team (Kinsey, Jessica Goshorn, Kylie Plourde and Giberson), Donovan in the javelin, Plourde in the triple jump and Melissa McKenney in the pole vault.

On the boys’ side, Jahleel Williams of the Tigers took third in the triple jump at 39 feet, 10-1/4 inches, while teammate Andrew Lewis was fourth in the discus at 131 feet, 6 inches.

Other FF boys qualifying were Jahleel Williams in the 100 and the long jump, Legeorge Williams in the triple jump, Lewis in the shot put, Nathan McLaughlin in the pole vault and the 4×100 relay team (Legeorge Williams, McLaughlin, Jake Wortman and Jahleel Williams),

At Cony High School in Augusta that same day, the Class B state championship were held. The only PI athlete to place was Amanda Bennett, who was sixth in the girls’ 1,600-meter race walk with a time of 9:06.11.

Other Wildcat girls qualifying for the state meet were Erica Hemphill in the 100, Meredith Stewart in the shot put and discus and Bonnie Corey in the race walk.

For the boys, participating in the state meet from PI were Logan Good, Isaac Estey and Ben Sipe in the 100, Sam Clukey in the 400, Matt Eager in the 3,200, the 4×100 relay team (Clukey, Estey, Good and Sipe), the 4×400 relay team (Sipe, Mitchell Ayotte, Estey and Clukey), David Paradis in the pole vault and Ayotte in the high jump and the triple jump.
