Can anyone tell me why the Hodgdon and Houlton school districts are taking separate weeks for the harvest break? Houlton’s harvest recess is the last week of September and Hodgdon’s harvest break is the first week of October. Can’t our school districts at least come together for harvest break?
Who made this seemingly illogical decision and can it be changed? If it benefits the farming community, I am 100 percent in support of this calendar. However, I have talked to farming families who use student workers and they do not see the benefits of this disconnected calendar.
It definitely hurts the families and civic organization that are involved in both communities, leaving children and adults disconnected for two weeks. I just do not see the logic or benefits of this decision to isolate children, adults, and workers in our communities.
Did the two districts even consult one another on the calendar? Please let me know if you have any insight into this decision that will ease the distress of keeping our workers and families apart for two weeks during harvest break.
