As summer approaches the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for summer programs. Summer program booklets are dispersed to youths up to grades 9 at their local schools. Non-residents are welcome to come into the recreation center to pick up a booklet. Programs can also be viewed on line at www.caribourec.org.
The summer program registration dates are Wednesday, June 15 from 6-8 p.m. for residents only and Thursday, June 16 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. for residents and non-residents. Please note that non-residents that pay property tax in Caribou are considered a resident and can register on Wednesday.
The age cut-off date for recreation programs is April 30 unless otherwise noted. All participants must register in the correct age or grade category for all programs. Below is a listing of the programs being offered by the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department.
Baseball and softball are once again offered this year at the Teague Park ball field, starting June 22. Single A – Spinners baseball is for youths 5 years of age and meets Monday and Wednesdays from 8:30-9:15 a.m. Single A – Salem Soxs baseball for 6 year olds meets Tuesday and Thursdays from 8:30-9:15 a.m. Double AA- Sea Dogs Baseball for 7-8 year olds meets Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 1:15-2:30 p.m. Triple AAA – Paw Soxs baseball for ages 9-10 meets Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 2:45-4 p.m. Majors baseball for ages 11-12 meets Wednesdays from 10:30-11:45 a.m. and on Fridays from 10-11:15 am. Junior Girls softball for ages 8-12 meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Senior girls softball for ages 13-16 meets Mondays from 10:30-11:45 a.m.
The Caribou outdoor swimming pool is located on Glenn Street. General swim starts June 27 through Aug. 12. The hours are Monday through Friday 2-4 p.m. and Monday and Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. Children 6 years of age and under must be accompanied at all times by a parent or legal guardian. Children that are not potty-trained must wear rubberize, elastic legged coverings in the water. Swimming lessons will be offered for swimmers of all abilities. Participants must be at least six years of age or entering first grade. Lessons are offered in half hour lessons, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Swimming lessons will be offered in two-week sessions over the summer period. Session dates are detailed in the program booklet. The lesson levels range from alligators to advanced swimmers. There is also a swim team which meets Monday through Thursdays from 4-5 p.m. for ages 6-18.
Tennis lessons are offered in three two week sessions throughout the summer for ages 6-18. The levels are beginners, advanced beginners, intermediates and advanced intermediates. Tennis tikes are for 6-8 year olds. Tennis team is also available for interested youths throughout the summer on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons.
Cheerleading Camp is offered from June 27-Aug 19 for youths in grades 6-8 and meets Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9 a.m.-noon at the Wellness and Recreation Center.
CRX Take Me Outside program is offered again this year for youths entering into grades 7-10. Week 1, starting June 27, is Treasure Hunting where youths will learn about Geocaching. Week 2, starting July 5, is Kayaking I, where youths learn about boat swamping, double-bladed paddles, T-rescues, towing kayaks and kayak surfing. Then its off to the streams and rivers for a fun filled adventure. Week 3 – starting July 11, is Kayaking II, where youths will learn the basic strokes, survival techniques and progress to lake touring on area lakes. Week 4 – starting July 18, is Wild Outdoor Women where girls will hike, bike, canoe, and kayak while having fun. Week 5 starting July 25 is Mountain Biking where participants will experience local off road trails as well as single track courses. Bonus 1 week, starting Aug. 2, is a trip to Baxter State Park for youths entering grades 9 or 10 and Bonus II week starting Aug 16, is another trip to Baxter State Park for youths entering grades 7 or 8. There are fees for all CRX programs.
