SACS students explore ‘service beyond self’

Southern Aroostook Community Principal Jon Porter initiated  a project for high school students called  “Service Beyond Self.”
This year, the junior class was involved in several projects, but most recently  helping with the clean-up of the Merrill Millstream Community Park.
“The students worked hard to fit this work commitment into their busy schedules,” said Lynn Gustin, junior class adviser. “They wanted to give of themselves and they had a great time doing it.”

Also appreciative was local park work coordinator Ken Bustard.
“He is so excited about this park project and was most grateful for the students helping hand,” Gustin said. “His enthusiasm was contagious and the students just got to work.”
Students are already talking about helping again.
“Working in your community certainly gives you an appreciation for what others are doing to bring beautiful things to light for others to enjoy,” Gustin said. “Several students had never been to this park but thought it was great.”
The park is a young project that many are working hard at to improve and grow and it continued with the junior class.
