The Whittier Congregational Church will have its annual “trash, treasurer and food sale” on Saturday, July 30, and will be from 9 a.m. to noon. On Sunday, July 10, Clayton and Charlene Webb had their own country jamboree at their home, and about 70 people attended, enjoying the music and singing along. It was a potluck affair and the Webbs also served hotdogs, with all the trimmings, to go with the different salads. This is getting to be an annual affair that many people look forward to.
Not much to report on the wild life of the area, but one day about a week ago I did spot a good sized skunk waddling across my front lawn early one morning and he headed for the barn. Hope he does not have a family hidden there someplace. I haven’t seen any skunk holes in my lawn yet, but keep an eye out for them so I can fill them in. I have stopped putting out much birdseed for my finches (and the gray squirrels) as I figure they can find food Mother Nature provides for them now. I am still swimming at the pool at Vacationland Estates and occasionally spot a deer on my way there. Wish they would drift up my way and enjoy my back lawn as a grazing field. I miss watching them as it had become sort of a habit.

Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing
Hello everyone. A beautiful week weatherwise and we thank you Lord. Betty Britton is a hospital patient. Get better, Betty. Arlene Friel recently celebrated a birthday, her 92nd I believe. Correct me if I’m wrong! Happy Birthday, Arlene.
Sympathy is extended to Lillian Stairs in the loss of Joe Jr., her son. It was the result of an accident, so sudden. It is always hard, very hard to lose one’s son. God bless.
We had a great talk on how to prevent fraud by Jean Wiggins, Senior Medicare Patrol, in the community room on Friday. She represents Aroostook Agency on Aging. Her tips were: check your medical bills, summary notices, and explanation of benefits; read your Medicare notices. You can get a free credit report by calling 1-877-322-8228. If you have any questions, you may call Jean at 764-6182. She can help you with answers. We were given a blue bag and a calendar for keeping appointments. Thank you, Jean.
Phyllis Snell had an accident—fell and broke her hip. It happened at her home. She’s a patient at Houlton Regional Hospital. Hope it is not too bad, Phyllis. Shirley Nason was in Bangor recently to meet her sister, Ruth, who was arriving for a visit from Florida.
The Purple Hat and Red Hat ladies will meet at the park in Houlton Thursday night to hear McGill’s music concert. If you see a lot of red and purple hats, you will know what is going on.
Here’s a fact about prayer: St. Peregrine is the saint to pray for about cancer. In the 14th century St. Peregrine was given a devastating diagnosis of his time. His painful foot and leg pain were symptoms of advanced cancer with amputation the only solution. It would be carried out the next morning. He spent an all night vigil before the Blessed Sacrament and had a vision of the Lord, and a complete cure. Father Peregrine chose faith and prayer instead of despair.
How good are the fresh vegetables, peas, chard and potatoes. We are grateful. The following is from Proverbs: 15:23: “A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good is it.”
Have a safe and fruitful week.

Recitation of the TOPS and KOPS pledges were noted and the Attraction poem. Charlotte Marley had charge of the program in the absence of leader Denise Clark. She distributed sheets containing a survey on servings. We filled out the sheets and then went over each one as to servings, for example, one tablespoon or two tablespoons, one cup or 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup, veggies, grains, oils and butter, etc. It was very interesting.
Charlotte also provided a story on Start Overt. Participating were nine ladies: Lois Downing, Aileen Smith, Joanne Scott, Diane Folsom, Barbara Whited, Kay Grass, Donna Parent and Ardella Bennett. The ladies were reminded to please be present for next week’s meeting as Janice Cote, chapter representative, will be attending.
