100 Years Ago-Aug. 2, 1911
Aroostook Times

    Local — Miss Anna Barnes has returned from Orono where she took a course at the University of Maine summer school which will be valuable to her work as librarian of Cary Library.
    Moving — Mrs. Carrie Mansur is removing her household goods from her residence on Water Street, recently sold and is storing same until her new residence on Pleasant Street is ready for occupancy.
    Chamber of Commerce — Discussions are taking place regarding the need for a trotting park. One piece of land being considered is the 25 acres in the rear and including the Burleigh Grove on Pleasant Street for $15,000.

    Linneus — Sometime early in August on a day to be announced, Houlton residents who were born or whoever lived in Linneus will hold a get-together meeting at the Country Club for a supper and general social evening.
    Houlton — A tonsil clinic was held at the Madigan Hospital Thursday when six children from Ludlow were operated on. Dr. P.M. Ward was assisted by the State Nurse, Miss Sutherland.
    Local — James Seamans, son of Mrs. Annie Seamans of 74 High Street is a member of the crew of the U.S.S. Oklahoma now anchored off San Sebastian, Spain to take off American refugees caught unaware in the revolution torn country.
50 Years Ago- Aug. 3, 1961

    Solos at 16 — Galen Hogan, who celebrated his 16th birthday Monday will remember it for another reason in years to come. That day he soloed and became eligible for his student’s license, permitting him to fly alone. His instructor was Linwood Lawrence who said this feat had never been duplicated in Lawrence’s 20 year aviation career.
    Dairy sold — The Guimond Farms of Fall River, Massachusetts, who constructed a modern dairy plant in Caribou two years ago have purchased Toner’s Dairy of Houlton in an expansion move. Toner’s Dairy owned and operated by Edward H. Toner since 1926 on the Calais Road. He has been aided in this venture by his son, J. Darrell Toner.
    Water-skiing competition — Frank Beaulieu of Houlton, a member of the Houlton International Ski Club won second place at Old Town in the men’s jumping event. His combined jumps of 96 and 97 feet equaled the first-place winner, Bryant Brooks, but Brooks took first with better form.

    SAD 70 — The Board gave its approval to a teacher contract that gives starting teachers with a bachelor’s degree a beginning salary of $13,450 and starting teachers with a master’s degree a salary of $14,795.

In back, Marcie Hanning, Gloria Brown, Kent Cassidy, Carol Bubar, Kevin Cyr and Chris Reardon.

    Houlton Country Club — The big match between Rellon Mr. Ping Powers and John Old Master McCann is history. They played before an enthusiastic gallery of a score or more. The final tally was McCann 45, Powers 47 or 48, but who’s counting? It was great fun, and good friendly competition. In a solemn ceremony at the Powers’ poolside, Mr. Ping graciously presented the priceless golden iron to the Old Master. Will this turn into an annual Almon H. Fogg Challenge Match?
    Grand Opening — The Fishman Mall will officially open at 9 a.m. on July 31. Stores open for business will be Po-pourri, Good & Plenty, Recollections and Jo’s Kitchen.
