To the editor:
The recent RSU 50 budget meeting brought out many concerns that our entire community must come to terms with. Educating our children and preparing them for success is a complicated and expensive endeavor. We are challenged by unemployment levels not seen since the Depression and a draw down in state and federal spending that is staggering. Mandates require us to provide services and programs that ensure all of the children have the resources necessary to achieve their best.
Throw in two communities coming together for the first time, a new school board, a failed budget and the makings for gridlock become clear. Having spoke out on this issue, and having attended some of the meetings, I intend to support the school board in their decision to put this new budget to the people. The increase to the home owners isn’t substantial enough for us to demand the $750,000 in reductions the board would have to find to flatten the budget and have no tax increase. We can still argue and strive to save our funds and next year we can get together and have another throw down. But, it is time to put our differences aside — the board has it as good as it is going to get.
I hope many others will come to the polls on September 7th and support the RSU 50 school board. They are really very good representatives and we are lucky to have them.
