Caribou captures County tennis titles
CARIBOU — Summer recreation programs are winding down for the season and County titles are on the line.
In Caribou Thursday, Aug. 4 the County Doubles Tennis Tournament was played on the Teague Park courts for area youths between the ages of 8-18. More than 30 participants from Caribou, Presque Isle and Van Buren took part. Players competed in 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18 male/female brackets by playing the best two out of three, six-game sets.
In addition to the doubles titles the overall team titles were decided as well. Going into play on Thursday Caribou had the overall lead, with Presque Isle second and Van Buren third. After doubles play Caribou captured its 29th straight team title after the annual youth tennis tournaments.
In the 10-12 girls’ division, only two teams from Caribou entered the competition. Top-seeded Gabrielle Marquis and Kassie Krul defeated teammates Kaylyn Krul and Hannah McDonald 6-1, 6-1.
The 10-12 boys’ bracket saw top-seeded Gabe Rand and Bailey Griffith of Caribou defeating Noah Hiedorn and Alec Cyr, also of Caribou, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in a best three out of five final.
There were no entries in the 13-15 girls’ division.
In the 13-15 boys’ bracket Caribou managed to survive a battle with Presque Isle. Top-seeded Ethan Plourde and Tyler Willey bested Liam Hughes and Chris Carroll, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3.
Only two teams competed in the girls’ 16-18 division, but familiar high school rivals provided an intriguing finals matchup. Presque Isle’s number two-seeded Kayla Girardin and Chelsea Carroll were looking for an upset of the top-seeded Carlee Pinette and Alex Massey of Caribou. The upset didn’t happen as Pinette and Massey won 6-0, 6-1.
The boys’ 16-18 bracket went to Caribou’s Zachary Gorence and Nick Willey. The duo topped Brandon Ouellette and Mark Levasseur of Van Buren, 6-3, 6-2.
