The controlled moose hunt in select portions of Aroostook County will be getting underway the week of August 15.
This hunt was established three years ago in response to farmers’ concerns about crop damage and high incidences of moose-vehicle collisions along Routes 1 and 161.
The hunt is not recreational, but rather a targeted and focused effort to effectively manage moose in an area that would not normally attract recreational hunters. The game department has issued 100 permits to eligible landowners and guides, with 60 percent of the permits going to landowners and 30 percent to registered Maine guides. Ten permits were also allocated to disabled veterans.
This hunt is in addition to the traditional moose hunt which will be taking place over three different weeks this fall. Those hunters were selected by lottery draw back in June.
