EASTON — A Fort Fairfield resident was killed in an ATV crash Aug. 3.
“At about 10:05 p.m. on Aug. 3, a motorist and Trooper Rob Flynn stopped to check on an unattended UTV (side-by-side version of an ATV) located in the bushes adjacent to Route 1A at the Easton/Fort Fairfield town line. Trooper Flynn approached the unattended UTV and found 35-year-old Kevin Helstrom, of Fort Fairfield, lying next to the machine,” said Sgt. Tom Pelletier, Maine State Police.
Crown Ambulance responded to the scene and verified that Helstrom was deceased.
According to Pelletier, subsequent investigation revealed that Helstrom was traveling east on the Easton Line Road at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred.
“Helstrom failed to stop at the intersection of Route 1A, crossed the roadway, striking a large rock pile causing the Arctic Cat Prowler to become airborne and roll over, ejecting Helstrom,” said Pelletier.
Pelletier said Helstrom was not traveling with any other ATVs at the time and was the only occupant of the UTV.
“Helstrom sustained major trauma to the head and chest. Helstrom was not wearing a helmet or seatbelt. The UTV sustained extensive damage,” said the sergeant.
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
“High speed and alcohol are considered to be factors in the accident,” said Pelletier.
The Maine State Police were assisted by U.S. Border Patrol and the Fort Fairfield Police Department.
