WASHBURN NEWS

On Friday, Aug. 19, 2011 from 3-4:30 p.m., the Washburn Memorial Library presents Lt. Paul D. Dudley, president, 20th Maine Vol. Inf. Co. B. Third Brigade, First Division, Fifth Corps, Army of the Potomac.
Lt. Dudley will be presenting a program entitled “A Day In The Life Of A Civil War Soldier.” Lt. Dudley will also be discussing recruitment in the Civil War. We would love to see you there.
On Saturday, Aug. 20, in the afternoon, Louise Cole and Londa Brown will be available to sign the special Sesquicentennial book they have worked tirelessly on. This 192-page bound edition covers local events from the beginning in 1861 to current times and provides a fantastic overview of life in this small but active community. It will be available for $20 per copy.
On Sunday, Aug. 21, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., the Washburn Memorial Library presents writer Glenna Johnson Smith, author of “Old Maine Woman: Stories From The Coast To The County.” Ms. Smith will be reading from her latest work and a book-signing will follow. The event will start off with some light refreshments.
Please join the Washburn Memorial Library staff for these special events. The Washburn Memorial Library is located at 1290 Main Street in Washburn. Contact librarian Katherine Veitschegger for details, 455-4814.
ATV trail detour
The section of trail by the boat landing to the Gardner Creek Road has been temporarily closed. Please do not try to enter this section of closed trail for your safety. Two concrete barriers have been placed at the trail entrance by the boat landing, one on the boat landing side of the ATV bridge, two at McCain’s and one on the side trail by McCain’s. They will remain in place and the trail closed until demolition and cleanup are completed at the old McCain’s site. Please keep your speed under 35 mph while traveling the shoulder of the detoured zone of the main road, including while crossing the bridge.
Club seeks parade participants
We are looking for ATVers that would like to ride with the Washburn ATV Club in the August Festival Parade this coming Saturday, Aug. 20. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m., with lineup on Porter Street. We will be meeting at the parade line up between 8:30-9 a.m. All are welcome to attend. Children must wear a DOT-approved helmet and all ATVs must be registered.
We will be having a food booth at the Antique Tractor Pulls on Aug. 21. Food booth starts at 10 a.m., with the Tractor Pulls at 11 a.m.
Any questions or concerns, contact Roger Hewitt at 455-8315.
Mill Pond Community Day
The Millpond Community Day was held Saturday, Aug. 13. Volunteers from Washburn Rotary and the Mill Pond Park Committee worked on the bridge over the dam and raked the lawn to remove goose droppings! Unfortunately, the wood on the bridge was too wet to paint.
Members of the August Fest Committee sold T-shirts and quilt raffle tickets, while Warner Archer entertained the workers with live country music. Popular with young and old, Carroll Sperrey provided tractor train rides, courtesy of the Antique Tractor Club. The winner of the children’s Rubber Ducky Race was Alexis Latonica. Thanks to all who came out to help.
The Nadeau Family Band rocked the Trail Runners Clubhouse last Saturday evening, despite several rain showers. Great music was enjoyed by all who attended, and the ATV Club provided some tasty food. Many thanks to the Trail Runners Club for providing the venue. Please consider a membership in either club!
