BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER — In late July, the team known as Paws United (employees from United Insurance) enjoyed a coffee and donut breakfast party as a reward for raising the most money during the Team Challenge in the Paws for the Cause walk. The team was made up of co-workers at Presque Isle’s United Insurance, along with some family and friends. This was the first year that the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle added a Team Challenge to its annual June fund-raising walk, and Paws United came through in a big way, raising more than $500 for the County’s homeless animals. Pictured in front from left are: Wanda Guiggey, Emily Straetz, Jessica Straetz, Liz Farley and Lisa Wilcox. In back: Kevin Thorstenson, Kristen Clark, Lynn Ouellette and Kris Collier.

We wondered what we could do to make this any sweeter, so we called our local veterinarians and asked for their support. Their reply and generosity blew us away. Hotham’s Veterinary Services, Presque Isle Animal Hospital and North Country Animal Hospital have all agreed to lower their cost to alter any cat adopted on Aug. 27.  They are all offering $40 for a spay of a female cat and $22.50 for the neuter of a male cat; this is half off the original price for any cat adopted only on Aug. 27.

Their support means so much to us and we are so pleased at how generous all practices have been. Let’s make this event a huge one. Please tell all of your friends and family that Aug. 27 is the day to adopt a cat! If you see Dr. Hotham, Dr. Pesut or Dr. McQuade, please thank them for being so generous and helping the homeless animals at the shelter.

As with any adoption at the Central Aroostook Humane Society, any adopter must fill out an application and that application must be approved. That means that all the other animals in your household need to be altered and up to date on their shots, and yes, we do call the vet’s office and check. We also need approval from your landlord and references. We are looking for loving, responsible homes, not just anyone who wants a cat. And, as mandated by state of Maine law, a $100 deposit must be left with the adoption of an unaltered animal; the deposit is refundable after you have your pet altered.

We can do this folks; we can get these wonderful cats into loving homes. Unfortunately, one case of upper respiratory can wipe out an entire shelter, so it is urgent that we move some cats and kittens before that happens. Please help us by promoting adoptions on Aug. 27, and also by being an advocate of spaying and neutering; locally and nationally, the cat population is out of control. There is absolutely no good reason why your cat or any cat should be having kittens. If you want a reason to have your cat altered, come by the shelter and see the little faces peering out of the cages; they didn’t ask to be born or abandoned, they only ask to be fed and loved.

If you are looking for a friend for life, visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, or give us a call at 764-3441. You can also visit us on Facebook or at our website www.centralaroostookhumanesociety.org.

Please have your pets spayed or neutered.
